→英語圏にもSystem Engineerという職種はありますよね、というお話。

たしかにSystem Engineerという職種は存在する。ただしそれが日本のシステムエンジニア(SE)と同じかというと...ずいぶん違うように思える。例えばCareerBuilderでSystem Engineerを検索し、そこでの職種・職務説明を見ると良い。

The System Engineer is principally responsible for installing LANs and networking technologies for our clients, and training and supporting clients and their networks. The System Engineer configures the equipment and software to meet client business needs, trains the customer on the solution, and documents the solution for ongoing support. The System Engineer can function as part of an implementation team on larger projects, or individually provides the services on support visits or smaller projects. The System Engineer may also provide technical support to the sales staff and assist with the design of LAN-based solutions.

  • Develop and deploy hardware and software solutions for end user community utilizing both Macintosh and Windows systems
  • Responsible for Macintosh related engineering assignments
  • Hardware and software verification and validation testing
  • Develop support documentation, and maintaining and utilizing software deployment including Absolute Manage/LANrev and MS SMS/SCCM
  • Ensure patch compliance with applicable customer policies
  • Provide tier 3 technical support
  • Looking for a System Engineer with experience in Core Network application in Telecom domain
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience with architecting complex telecom applications on Layer 2 and Layer 3
  • Experience working with L2 - FR/ATM, Ethernet & L3 - Network Layer: IPV4, IPV6, IGMP
  • Should be up to date on recent technical advancements in Telecom – especially Ethernet, VoIP, VPN, LTE, IPV6 Migrations areas
  • Should be well verse with configurations of routers, switches and network management.
  • Must have working experience on CMM level 3 processes and methods
  • Travel to customer sites to work on their systems
  • Systems engineering activities in all phases which include: Analysis, discovery, design, build, test and deployment of networking infrastructure components.
  • Advanced technical support of computer network systems and other operating systems.
  • Also performs project management in systems upgrades and installations.

→Systems Engineerで検索すると、ざっと160ページもの結果がでてくる。全部に目を通したわけではないが、日本だとむしろ「フィールドエンジニア」「設置担当」「保守員」と呼ばれる職種に近いのではなかろうか。日本でいうシステムエンジニア(SE)に近いのはSystems Analystだろう。
