The Tour de Georgia has been called off for 2009, with organisers citing 'tough' economic times as the reason, according to the Savannah Morning News. The race's future had been in doubt, but Georgia is not ready to give up on the Tour.

自転車チームや自転車レースに対する資金提供ってのは、経済活動の「余裕」を見る良い尺度だと思う。他の人気競技に比べれば微々たるものだし、そこを削ることで企業の収益が大幅に改善できるとも思えない。

でも人間ってのは不思議なもので、大きな危機がやってきても、その危機は直視せず、細かい、手を下しやすい部分から対策していく。不況を経験したことがある人なら覚えがあるのでは？

で、大出血している部分は放置されるから根本的治癒もあり得ない。自転車レースに提供する資金を節約したところで、それらの企業が息を吹き返せるわけではない。

One hotel manager on Tybee Island, where the race kicked off, says that when he attempted to collect on about $30,000 in unpaid bills, he was offered just $8,000 and told to "take it or leave it," according to the Savannah Morning News.
